Most Effective Ways To Overcome Overeating and Obsession With Food

Walking With God and With Each Other to Achieve Victory, Freedom, and Breakthrough in Your Life

Wrestling To Want To Eat When I Am Not Hungry

I had 2 bowls of soup and was going to put it away.  I decided to do it later to finish watching a movie.  I ate two more spoonfuls of soup.  I prayed to God to ask him to help and protect me from overeating.  Then I walked away from the pot of soup and didn’t eat anymore.  I asked God to help me and felt him intervening to prevent me from eating more.  I went to God for self-control and not overindulge in food.  By going to God for help to overcome my temptations with food, I feel a sense of power and strength, which is far greater than when I try to overcome my temptations on my own.

These are some of the most effective approaches

Prayer and Holding Onto Scriptures

What helps me is when I pray in advance if I find myself tempted or during the time I’m being tempted.  If I find myself struggling with wanting to eat a certain food, I start praying regularly and telling God that I am feeling very tempted by a certain food and/or if I’m tempted to eat too much.  I am open with God and talk to him about my temptations.  One of the fruits of the spirit is self-control.  By going to God for strength and power we have access to have self-control.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23

When I talk to God, I feel comforted and supported by him.  I feel a sense of peace and strength.  Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.  2 Corinthians 1:3-4.  I focus on God giving me comfort, which I actually do feel.  I have found that God wants us to be supported through our challenges and that he wants us to get victory.  He is compassionate, meaning that he sees our suffering and helps us.  I have found that internally God has given me tremendous amount of comfort through my challenges.  I have found that despite what’s happening externally, God will be there for me internally working on my heart, in mind and through my situation.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Isaiah 40:29 .  As we go to God he can and will gives us strength when we do feel weary.

Combining praying and talking to God with holding onto scriptures from the bible will help us and deliver us through our situations.  In regards to food and the temptation to overeat and eat foods you are tempted, God is there for you and accessible to you.  I hope you will give God a chance to help you as well as finding scriptures to hold on and meditate.  As you can see below the power of meditating on scriptures.  Meditating on scripture will focus your attention on God’s love, power, mercy, compassion, greatness, and overall how he wants to and will be there for you.

Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love.  Psalm 48:9

My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises.  Psalm 119:48

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.  Joshua 1:8

Talking to People

I find talking to people that I’m friends with helps me a lot.  Whether I talk about my temptations or if I give in, I feel better.

When I talk to God and with people, and hold onto scriptures I feel it helps me a lot to overcome my temptations with food, overeating, and through my challenges in my life.  We are created to have a relationship with God and people so that we would get so many things to meet our deepest needs and truly fill our souls deepest longing.

As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”
These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One[d]
with shouts of joy and praise
    among the festive throng.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.  Psalm 42:1-5

I hope this approach towards your temptation to overeat or eat foods you are tempted to eat.  Please share if you have ever prayed to God, held onto scriptures, and/or talked to people when you were tempted.  Please share what your experience was.

Here are some bibles and workbooks that could help you to deepen your relationship with God, help you through your battle with food and temptation, and apply scriptures to your life and journey.  Go after it, you are worth it.  Share your journey.
